The research literature available in the US on the evolution of language policy and planning issues involved in bilingual education programs in Mayan communities in Guatemala is highlighted. General comments are provided regarding language policy and planning for bilingual programs for ethnic groups within the borders of nation/states.

A study that compares the effect of a reading intervention program to that of a comprehensive English language development (ELD) program on English language learners' (ELLs') achievement at one California high school is illustrated. As educators work to improve ELL achievement, the importance of curricula that meet students at their linguistic and academic level cannot be understated.

A study of language use examined the extent to which bilingual Hispanic young adults used their two languages in varying aspects of their lives and analyzed the extent to which they maintained the use of Spanish in these domains. The findings from this study point to a decided and rapid shift to English within immigrant families in the south Florida area, especially between second-generation young adults.
